Tottenham's riots 2011
Tottenham's riots of august 2011 brought a great media attention to Tottenham Hale's neighborhood.
Benjamin, a young Spanish from the region of Murcia that has been settled in north London for more than ten years and has worked as a journalist reporter in the area describes the riots as "a youth revolution in which all the communities of the neighborhood gathered together".
However, despite the criticism and tension that arose after the riots, they had a very clear subsequent impact on the economy of Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters. While the businesses were still trying to recover from the damage and economic losses caused by the riots, Tottenham's neighborhood suffered a great loss of prestige and status which caused a significant drop in housing prices.
"There has been a visible change from Seven Sisters to Tottenham Hale, but now we're starting to notice an increasing dividing line" notes Benjamin regarding the neighborhood's regeneration plans that include among others the inclusion of large chains like Starbucks or Costa Coffee in strategic points of the ward, creating a fierce competition for small local businesses.
Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters are a large cluster of small local businesses, run by families in most of the cases, with services orientated to specific communities. African hairdressers, Polish grocery stores, Caribbean fruits, among others parade through the streets of the area.
The drop of house's prices in Tottenham along with the area's regeneration plans from Haringey's council have achieved in the past couple of years, attracting new businesses and residents to this part of London.
Initiatives such as the "639 Enterprise Centre", created after the riots in order to help local residents to create or maintain their businesses, underscores the importance and strengthening of the different communities in Tottenham Hale and the importance of strenghening local communities within the Regeneration plans.
